Frequently Asked Questions

When can I get a CPT?
Curriculum Practical Training (CPT) is a privilege for international students who exhibited academic excellence and in good standing. The department will recommend CPT for student who has studied in the department at least two consecutive semesters either in the MSIT program or BSIT program.

To apply a CPT, you need to obtain an offer letter from a sponsor, preferably in the Central Valley region. Make an appointment with the department chair or the graduate coordinator. Also, you need to register in a supervisory course, i.e.: IT 190, IT 199, IT 290 or IT 298.

Students in the CPT period are expected to perform professional and display high level work ethics since you are representing the department. Your performance will not only help you to secure a rewarding career but also helps other international students in the future.

MSIT transfer
We welcome graduate students whose undergraduate majors are not in industrial technology, such as: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, physics, business, etc. Usually you will be conditionally classified at the time of transfer with pre-requisites determined by the graduate coordinator.

If you are already a CSUF graduate student, you may obtain an Add or Change Graduate Degree of Advanced Study Objective form (yellow color) from the department office or the Division of Graduate Studies. To transfer, you must have a 2.5 GPA on the last 60 units or have taken the GRE test.

If you are a new graduate student admitted into a graduate program other than MSIT, you must stay there at least one semester before you can apply for the transfer. Whether you want to take any courses in Industrial Technology in order to transfer later, it is at your discretionary. However, the department discourage you taking any 200 level courses.

If you decide to take 100 level upper division courses, please be advised that we cannot guarantee all these courses can be all transferred if you are admitted in the MSIT program. If you get a grade of B or better, we will consider to apply them as graduate credits. Please bear in mind there is limit of three (3) 100 level courses can be applied as graduate electives. Some 100 level courses recommended by the graduate coordinator may be pre-requisites for classified standing.
